Robinson's Weblog

These are the ramblings of an inquisitive educator, as recorded in a fancy Weblog. Her continuing mission: to explore strange new insights, to seek out new understandings and new methods of creating engaging learning experiences, and to go boldly where many other educators are headed as well.

Robinson’s Weblog #013: Poor Poor Common Core Part Two: Don’t Throw Out Baby CCSS With the Bathwater Either

Imagine that you’re shopping for an oven and the salesperson is trying her darndest to convince you to buy a particular model. If it’s the best oven for you, then you might buy it. Right?  Me too. I’m not going to keep using an outdated oven with a broken handle, that takes an hour to pre-heat just because the salesperson has an agenda.

That's the way I feel about educational approaches. As science educators, we have to judge each one based on how well it realizes the vision and achieves the goal of science education, regardless of anyone's questionable agendas. I wrote about the vision and goal for U.S. K-12 science education articulated in A Framework for K-12 Science Education (National Research Council, 2012), and reflected in the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) in Robinson’s Weblog #008: What’s the Big Idea? Part Two: The Big Ideas about Science Education (The Vision and Goal of the Framework).

The NGSS are aligned with the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). This sounds great, but as I stated in Robinson’s Weblog #011: Don’t Throw out Baby NGSS with the Bathwater Part Two - Engineering? Huh?, I do have an aversion to jumping to conclusions without all of the facts. So  I’ll have to carefully examine the CCSS to see how well they realize the vision and achieve the goal of science education.

I’ll explore this in future weblog entries. Stay tuned!
